How Breakout EDU Supports Language Acquisition

Multilingual learners develop content and language concurrently, with academic content as a context for language learning and language as a means for

learning academic content.

WIDA has identified four Key Language Uses—Narrate, Inform, Explain, and Argue— that can be used to prioritize and organize the integration of content and language.

At Breakout EDU , the main focus is on three of the four: Inform, Explain and Argue.

  • Inform highlights language to provide factual information. As students convey information, they define, describe, compare, contrast, organize, categorize, or classify concepts, ideas, or phenomena.
  • Explain highlights language to give an account for how things work or why things happen. As students explain, they substantiate the inner workings of natural, man-made, and social phenomena.
  • Argue highlights language to justify claims using evidence and reasoning. Argue can be used to advance or defend an idea or solution, change the audience’s point of view, bring about action, or accept a position or evaluation of an issue

The Breakout EDU focus is on the use of language to inform, explain and argue via writing and speaking. Students will first make observations and collect information from puzzles, recording that information in words, phrases and sentences. Students will then use that information to make a claim regarding a possible solution to the puzzle which they will both record in writing and argue with each other through discourse..

To facilitate this process, we have created resources that can be used during the problem solving process.

The KSE Chart is intended for use with younger learners. It has a simpler design as well as added space for recording information.

The CER Charts are intended to use with older users who might not need quite as much space for recording. There are two versions; one for using with a single lock and the other for using with multiple lock experiences.

These resources, along with some specifically selected puzzle examples can be found below.

In addition, a video overview that models how the resources can be used has been provided.
